EZPass 2

What is an EZPass 2
A passme is a device that is used in conjunction with a commercial cart (1) to bypass the DS's code checking mechanisms thus allowing you to run you own code on a DS.
(1) There are a few models of passme2 that have a DS game built into the device.
The passme2 is an updated version of the passme that allows people with later model DS's that have had the early model passmes blocked to use a passme type device sucessfully. There is now a third generation of passme type devices known as nopass devices (see article linked for more infomation) but their status with EZFlash products is currently up in the air.
The passme2 devices are worse off in some ways as the list of games that can be used to help bypass the checking mechanisms of the DS is lower than the EZPass and using a passme2 variant is more complex than a passme1 variant.
The basic premise behind the devices is that the passme2 device tricks the DS into loading code stored on the SRAM of your cart (it uses a BIOS buffer overflow for the technically curious see here for more infomation). To do this a specific .sav file is needed and you will probably need to program you passme2 device to run with the game that corresponds to the .sav file (the areformentioned self contained passme2's are exempt from the need to program your device).
Many companies have different chips and save files: the EZTeam have their own (listed below) and others, including passkey2 users, can use Darkfaders files or there own respective companies files.
You can however run flashme on your DS once you get this up and running and then not require a passme anymore.
If you are unsure as to whether you need an passme or passme 2 there are a few ways to tell: The following models will likely require a passme 2 variant:
- iQue DS (all).
- Japanese Version. Serial Numbers beginning with NJH/NJF/NJM and the second number >=2
- USA Version. Unable to provide accurate information (October 2005 is a good bet and most red DS
- European Version. Serial Number beginning with NEH/NEM. Most of the DS' released are the new version.
- All versions which have been bought after Oct. 2005. Or more importantly manufactured after Oct. 2005.
- Australian Version. Serial Number beginning with NAF/NAH and the number greater than 100xxxxx. This appears to only be for the Silver DS, all non Silver DS' will only work with EZPass 2.
- DS lite models
Should you actually have a DS a way that should tell whether you require an EZPass or EZPass 2 is done by using Pictochat. Follow these instructions and you will know which EZPass is for you. Note, you cannot damage your DS by doing this.
- 1. Insert a DS game in NDS slot.
- 2. Turn up your DS and open Pictochat, room A.
- 3. Now remove the DS cartridge from the DS slot (don't worry, you can not do much harm).
- 4. Both screens should turn in the same colour.
If if the screens do not turn a colour indicating version 4 onwards (and you are not using iQue DS), it is a safe bet that it's PassME1 and WiFiME compatible.
The colour 'chart':
- Version 1: The DS will freeze
- Version 2: Grayish Blue
- Version 3: Dark Green (Note! A silver DS bought in MK:DS bundle is most probably NOT installed with FW4!)
- Version 4: Yellow
- Version 5: Purple
- Version 6: Purple
- iQue: Dark Green
- DSLite: Purple
- FlashMe: Dark Green

Using an EZPass 2 (how to program it and set up your cart)
In order to use an EZPass 2, you will need to program the onboard chip. The chip will need to be programmed to work with a specific game listed below. Download and save both the JED and SAV file to somewhere on your computer for a game that you will use with yoru EZPass 2.
To program the CPLD chip, you will need to obtain a copy of ispVM from Lattice Semiconductors. You will need to create an account in order to download the required file. An alternate download location is here.
You must install the Parallel Port cable and the USB cable into your computer before running the application. Please turn off your computer before plugging in the Parallel Port cable. Then plug in the JTAG connector into the EZPass 2.
Once this is done, install and run the application but do not install the USB driver.
Press the Scan button in the menu bar.
The EZPass 2 device will be displayed. Double Click the blank section that reads "FileName/IR-Length". If you get an error message, then your JTAG connector isn't plugged in correctly. Push it down a bit firmer and scan for devices again.
If everything works, a new window should open. Click on the "Browse" button and select your JED file you previously downloaded. Then click the "Ok" button. Click "Ok" on the popup Dialog Box as well.
Next, click Go button in the menu bar and wait approximately 4-5 seconds. The CPLD chip will be erased, written and then verified. You should see a green dot and the word Pass in the status field. This indicates a successful write to the chip.
If you get an error message writing to the cart, start the procedure again, ensuring the cable is plugged in fully.
Using EZManager/EZClient/EZ4 Client
Now you can run EZManager/EZClient and write the SAV file to the EZ3/EZ1/EZ2 cart.
EZManager Run EZManager and from the System Setting menu select "compatible EZ Passme 2". You will be prompted to select a .sav file. Choose the SAV file you downloaded earlier. This will be written to the cart.
Next write the NDS loader to the cart by choosing "Write EZ3 NDS loader" from the System Setting menu.
You can now start writing NDS games to the EZ-Disk portion of the cart (the NAND section). Once you have finished writing your NDS games, you will need to plug in the EZPass 2 into your NDS slot, then the game that corresponds to the JED/SAV written to the EZPass 2 into the back of the EZPass 2.
Then plug your EZFlash cart into the Gameboy Advance slot and turn on your NDS. If everything has worked correctly, you should see the EZFlash NDS loader menu. Highlight your game and press A or Double Tap a game to launch it.
EZClient
EZClient works in a similar way but you will need to use the passme2 options in the system config pulldown menu to get the .sav file written.
EZ4
The EZFlash IV not using a linker means it is a bit different:
First make sure to update the loader on your EZ4 so as to enable passme2 compatibilty then copy the required .sav file, make sure it is called passme2.sav, to a saver folder on your Mini-SD card. The directory should look like this:
Root+
+-Saver\passme2.sav
As noted, call the file passme2.sav. Then boot your NDS into GBA Mode. The EZ4 will detect the sav file and copy it to SRAM. Then power off your DS, and insert your Passme2 and power on your DS. It will now work properly.
Games that work with it
Introduction over here is a list of games you will be able to use with your EZPass 2 so as to get it to work.
A full list of compatible games follows. Once JED & SAVE files are available this list and the downloads will be available on the main EZFlash USA site.
The CPLD listed here are only intended for the EZPASS series, the EZTEAM will not responsibility for any device damage when using the CPLD code on another passme clone device.
- this list was comes from here (you can get the required save and jed files on it): EZPass2 list.
Should you so desire the original passme1 .jed file is available for you.
